Phlegm, street art

Phlegm is a is a Sheffield, UK based street artist, born in north wales. His style is quite unique in its intricacy and colours, you can also clearly see his back ground as a cartoonist. His work is much more illustrative than normal street art or graffiti. Phlegm's favorite place to paint is on abandoned buildings, his is mainly in Sheffield however you can find them as far afield as Croatia and Norway.Some of his work is almost surreal as it has mixtures of people, buildings and machines quite often he paints elaborate telescopes.

Grayson Perry, Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman

Grayson Perry has opened an exhibition in the British museum called Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman. He has been looking through the british museums collection for objects that might not be the most valuable or the oldest, but the objects that he likes the most. His new work is all about Alan Measles, a tedy bear from his childhood who was the god or king in his imaginary world. Another aspect to his work is that all the people coming to the exhibition are making a pilgrimage to the british museum.

This is probably the most famous of Grayson Perry's many pots, which are all very beautiful shapes with contemporary decorations.

This is the center-piece of the exhibition ,it's a ship made out of iron it has a flint axe on a plinth thats over 250,000 years old.

Buildings on stilts

Putting buildings on stilts has been happening for a long time to protect a building from tides or flooding. However in the last century stilts have been used in modern and contemporary architecture, either for affect or for practical use. A common use is to give a floating appearance like in Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth house.

There are allot of very good of contemporary examples of buildings that apear to look like they float, often a base principle for a building is the floating appearance.

Escher and illusion art

Lots of people love trying out illusions and staring at patterns but lots people don't take the time to look at the art,  the pictures of things that are ether weird or imposible in the real world. This style of art is on lots of ways similar to surrealism because they are usually painted very accurately. Escher was probably the first illusionist he drew and painted buildings and shapes. These are some of his finished works.

Escher is by far the most famous illusionist but there are many others who are painting now, the works these new artists produce are a lot more modern. The works bellow are by the artist Tang Yau Hoong.

Carlo Scarpa

Carlo Scarpa is an architect who I have been looking at for a while so I thought that I would a blog entry on him. He was Italian and he lived from 1906-1978, as well as being an architect he was also a glass and furniture designer. 2 of his most famous works were probably the Oliveti show room st marks square Venice, Italy and the Brion cemetery near Treviso in Italy. He is most famous for his detailing in every thing he designed, most of his works are mainly focused on the interior of buildings, like in the Querini Stampalia museum in Venice, Italy.

Art in computer games, assassin's creed

Some computer games inspire art works, one game that caught a lot of artists eye was assassin's creed, and more specifically assassin's creed revelations. Revelations is the character Ezio's last game, he has been in assassin's creed 2 and assassin's creed brotherhood. Lots of the paintings are of Constantinople (where the game is set).

One of my favourite assassin's creed inspired paintings is the picture bellow because of the arrangement of buildings and sea.

Barbara Hepworth Wakefield Clare Woods

The new exhibition at the Hepworth gallery wakefield it is by an english artist Clare Woods. Who is quite heavily inspired by the rocks and valley's and hills in peak district. She mainly paints in bright colours, with oil on aluminium sheets to get lots of interesting smooth textures. At first glance her pictures look completely abstract, but if you stand back a bit you can start to see the forms of rocks, trees and landscapes taking place. These are some of her paintings.

It is in the Hepworth gallery designed by David Chipperfield architects. It has lots different sections angled differently so it fits in with Wakefield's factory skyline. It also has some clever roof lights hidden from view. This is a picture of the gallery.
